Volunteer biography upon receiving the 2003 Rhode Island
Outstanding Philanthropic Citizen Award
Simone committed herself to
philanthropy when she wrote her first personal check to charity, as a
27-year-old executive director in Michigan. One year later, she joined
her first board of directors.
Simone has served on
the boards of local, national and international nonprofits for more
than 25 years. She founded the first statewide arts advocacy
organization in Rhode Island in 1984. Some of her other board
positions in Rhode Island have included the Sexual Assault and Trauma
Resource Center, and Looking Glass Theatre.
As board chair of CFRE
International, the baseline certification program for fundraisers
worldwide, Simone led the organization’s successful process to secure
independence from its parent body. She was the chair of the State Arts
Advocacy League of America and a member of the College of Arts and
Letters Alumni Board at Michigan State University. She has also served
on the local and international boards of the Association of
Fundraising Professionals.
In recent years, Simone’s personal
interest in social justice became the focus of most of her
philanthropy. In 2000, she founded the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, a
field of interest fund at The Rhode Island Foundation. The Women’s
Fund is part of the global movement to level the playing field for
women and girls.
Joyaux also donates time as a
teacher in the philanthropic sector, traveling as far as Australia to
speak. She provides pro bono consulting services to selected
organizations.
Simone volunteers an average of 10
hours per week, while working full-time. She and her husband commit
approximately 10% of their income to charity each year, and have
bequeathed their entire estate to charity upon their deaths.
Joyaux is recognized internationally
as a professional fundraising consultant. In 1987, she received Rhode
Island’s Outstanding Fundraising Executive award. Now the Outstanding
Philanthropic Citizen award recognizes her commitment as a long-time
volunteer and donor.
For Simone,
philanthropy is both an avocation and vocation. As Alfre Woodard said
in her preface to Robin Hood Was Right,
“Giving isn’t a posture reserved for the rich or powerful. It is the
responsibility and privilege of every man, woman, and child to
participate in the task of building more just and humane societies.”
And what a joy this is.
