Simone Joyaux is recognized internationally for her teaching and
presenting abilities. She is continually evaluated at the highest level
by participants because of her dynamic and involving style and knowledge
base.
Whether it is a conference, workshop presentation, keynote address or
organization training, Simone designs the program based on the needs of
the participants. A combination of lecture, participant dialogue, and
small group activities encourages questions and in-depth exploration of
issues. Participants leave inspired, with specific, manageable
strategies to use when they return to their own organizations.
Joyaux develops these programs for general audiences and beginners. She
also develops specialized sessions for advanced executives.
Simone is a faculty member for the Masters Program in Philanthropy and
Fund Development at St. Mary's University of Minnesota. Her current
teaching assignment is Volunteerism and Boards.
In
addition to workshops and conference presentations, Joyaux develops
comprehensive, integrated curricula for organizations. For example,
Joyaux created a 4-part, comprehensive curriculum in fund development
for the Alliance for Children & Families. Then Simone conducted a
session to train the trainers for the curriculum. She has also created
governance and fund development curricula for various community
foundations.
During consultancies, Joyaux Associates develops and conducts training
for staff, board and committees. Also the firm provides tutorials,
coaching and mentoring for staff.

Cases:
Conference appearances
Every year, hundreds
of staff and volunteers hear Simone speak at conferences. For example,
more than 100 fundraisers from throughout Mexico gathered to hear
Joyaux speak about board recruitment. The session was simultaneously
translated into Spanish as a contribution by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico
City. Fundraisers in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK have heard
Joyaux speak about fundraising certification, organizational
development, and strategic planning.
Simone is a regular
presenter at the International Conference of the Association of
Fundraising Professionals (formerly the National Society of Fundraising
Executives). This conference is the largest gathering of
not-for-profit organizations in the world.
Ford Foundation
The Ford
Foundation wanted to enhance the fundraising capabilities of ten of
its grantees. The organizations were recognized nationally and
internationally for their work in civil rights, refugee resettlement,
and community development. However, while staff had significant
experience writing grants, most of the grantees had little experience in
constituency development, individual solicitation, and building boards
to support expanded fundraising.
In cooperation with
the Ford Foundation, the Association of Fundraising Professionals
designed a training and consulting program to provide technical
assistance to these grantees. Simone Joyaux was selected as one of five
faculty members from 300 applicants nationwide.
Over the course of
four days, grantees and faculty explored ways to move organizations into
a new level of fundraising. A particular focus of discussion was how to
maintain client representation on boards while diversifying both funding
mix and solicitation strategies.
National Federation of Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers
The National
Federation of Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers uses Joyaux Associates
extensively. Simone develops and presents workshops at the Federation's
national conferences. The firm has written a board training manual and a
fund development manual for the Federation's member organizations.
Joyaux Associates has also developed a comprehensive training curriculum
to teach board members their roles and responsibilities. Most recently,
Joyaux presented key elements of board development for video
distribution nationwide.
Training for
grantees of community foundations
Joyaux has developed
and delivered fund development and governance curricula for grantees of
the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Waterbury (CT)
Foundation, the Greater Worcester (MA) Community Foundation,
and the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven.
For the fund
development program, participating organizations were required to bring
a team, which included the Executive Director, Board Chair, the Fund
Development Committee Chair, and the Director of Development if such a
position existed. For the governance program, participating
organizations were required to bring the Executive Director and Board
Chair. The team approach enhanced learning and produced a core group to
lead change back in the respective organizations.
The training program
for fund development covered all aspects of philanthropy and
fundraising, including board and staff roles, cultivation and
solicitation, and story telling.
Following the
success of the fund development training programs, Joyaux was asked to
develop a governance training program. This 4-session series
incorporated best practice and practical examples of how to strengthen
the board. Topics included the functions of the board as distinguished
from the performance expectations of the individual board member; skills
and behaviors necessary to produce an effective board; recruitment
strategies including the screening interview; and, how to design and
facilitate an effective board meeting. |
