Movies. TV. And vacation time.

The growing collection of DVDs for vacation joy…… So many delightful ones!

NewsRoom

Another Aaron  Sorkin script. Oh my gosh!! WOW! [My mom used to say, “wowdy dow.”]

And how about The American President?

And there’s so much more Aaron Sorkin.

Oh my. Oh wonderful.

Fun. Funny. Truthful. Angry. I’m so sad and angry. I know it’s “just a TV show” or “just a movie” … Because so much of this is real or at least feels real.

For fun. Just to laugh.

My friend Alene keeps sending me these funny things. So I’ll share some with you!!

The best part about getting older is… NOTHING. Getting older sucks.

You never appreciate what you have till it’s gone. Toilet paper is a good example.

I finally did it! Bought a new pair of shoes with memory foam insoles. No more forgetting why I walked into the kitchen.

Little notes from different places

I was going through my office supply cabinet. And I have tons of little notebook thingys.

And here are the quotes on the little notebooks:

SORRY. (Red and black plaid cover with Maple Leaf. Maple leaf is Canada.) And on the back: “Souvenirs that don’t suck!”

ORANGE. Engraved in the leather-like cover: “Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters.” And since I’m the conversation is a core business practice woman…with CRQs (cage-rattling questions)… This is perfect for me to keep!!!

PINK: Work hard. Play hard.

BLACK: “Always deliver more gratitude than expected.” From Tom Ahern.

More quotations…this time not so glum

“Everything is a tale. What we believe, what we know. What we remember, even what we dream. Everything is a story, a narrative, a sequence of events with characters communicating an emotional content. We only accept as true what can be narrated.” (The Angel’s Game, Carlos Ruiz Zafón) One of my most favorite quotes forever…Great for donor communications…for life…

“Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.” (Chinese proverb)

“However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.”  (Winston Churchill)

Some jokes…from a friend looking out for the rest of us!!

My ability to remember song lyrics from the 80s far exceeds my ability to remember why I walked into the kitchen.

First rule of cleaning while listening to music…The toilet brush is never the microphone…Never.

Does refusing to go to the gym count as resistance training?

She danced like nobody was watching. But people were watching and she looked like bees were attacking her.

Fun? Comfort? I’m not always sure.

I’m more and more into music.

I’m like in love with the new version (4th one) of A Star is Born. I keep listening to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing Shallow and Always Remember Us This Way and I’ll Never Love Again and Maybe It’s Time.

I came late to Bruce Springsteen. But now?! How about Dream Baby Dream… Look at the people. Waitin’ on A Sunny Day. And so many more.

Since I flew to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the end of January….I could fly to see Bruce and E Street. And I’m definitely going to see/hear Sean Rowe. Yes, I’ll drive all the way to Troy, NY. “To Leave Something Behind.” And he covers this oldie, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”

The music makes me feel…Better? Less worse? Fun and comfort? I’m not always sure.

Oh my gosh! WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Watch this video. Show this to your board. Share the video with your staff.

Maybe if everyone in the sector sent this video to every single foundation and corporation…. And the GOVERNMENT!!!!!!!! And even some of those individual donors. Hmmm….

Click here: WHAT IF PIZZA SHOPS WERE FUNDED LIKE NONPROFITS?

Maybe have this on a big screen scroll in the lobby of your organization. Maybe send this to every single taxpayer in your town, city, province, state. (I know. I’m getting carried away.)

Thanks, Bloomerang for sharing this MARVELOUS VIDEO and everything else you do all the time. Love you.

Sophia and The Princess Bride

Once upon a time, there was a young girl (5 years old) named Sophia.

Sophia and her mom were watching the movie The Princess Bride.

In this one scene: Our hero Westley – and his beloved Princess Buttercup – flee through an icky landscape with many icky things chasing and snatching and and … Buttercup is mostly kinda shrieking and fluttering and doing all those icky things attributed to “girls” – that real girls (#LikeAGirl) actually don’t do so much.

Over and over, Westley rescues Buttercup from dasdardly evildoers and gruesome monsters.

Sophia is squealing and cheering as the story progresses. But…

Sophia finally jumps up and actually yells at Princess Buttercup. “Stop waiting for Westley to help you. Quit screaming and fight!”

After the story ends – of course, happily – Sophia invents a new game to play with her mom. But Sophia makes a slight variation.

“Mommy, you play Westley and I’m Buttercup. And don’t rescue me. I can rescue myself!”

==============

That’s my kind of girl, woman, female…person.

Read this delightful book. Watch this cool movie. Cult status.

Check out William Goldman: American novelist, playwright, screenwriter. (Died 11-16-18.) Some of his other work: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Marathon Man.  A Bridge Too Far. All the President’s Men (Adaptation of the Bernstein/Woodward book). And so much more.

And for the writers out there, here’s what Goldman said…. “Writing is finally about one thing: going into a room alone and doing it. Putting words on paper that have never been there in quite that way before. And although you are physically by yourself, the haunting Demon never leaves you, that Demon being the knowledge of your own terrible limitations, your hopeless inadequacy, the impossibility of ever getting it right. No matter how diamond-bright your ideas are dancing in your brain, on paper they are earthbound.” [William Goldman, Adventures in the Screen Trade.]

WOW! This could be so very cool!

THE PHILANTHROPY INITIATIVE AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY

Thanks Jeff Broberg, cohort 17, MA in Philanthropy and Development at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota for sharing this!!!

“The Philanthropy initiative is a long-term project to collect, research, document, and display materials relating to the history and impact of American philanthropy, broadly-defined. An annual program, The Power of Giving: Philanthropy’s Impact on American Life, and changing exhibition, Giving in America, explore the collaborative power of giving in all forms and at all levels across a wide spectrum of issues and movements.”

HOW GREAT… Philanthrop is part of American history. Remember the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville — and his article “Democracy in America.” In this article, de Tocqueville wrote about civil and political society and the individual.

….Videos. Exhibits. Info about who gives and why and how and what we give. Giving and the arts, environment. Sample pledge letters and more.

Thank you thank you, Jeff!!!!

Loving quotations…redux

Hey thanks you all who read my blog. You sent such cool quotations to add to my quotations!!!

From Vicki James: “Fundraising allows ordinary people to change the world.” [YES! Ordinary people. Because philanthropy should be a democratizing activity…not just a major donor/major gift / wealthy thing!!!

Alex Cooper says: “My favourite, concise quote/directive is ‘every interaction is an ask’ – ingraining this in the organizational culture can sometimes be difficult but it is definitely a game-changer in terms of amplifying the narrative at every touchpoint once it’s in place.”

Bonnie Katusich gave me the total quote from Marianne Williamson, which I shared in my original blog:  “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, talented, gorgeous, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people per mission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

And there are more quotes to come!!!
