I haven’t been able to figure out why the Republicans and Democrats cannot combine cuts with increased revenue. You know, to fix budgets and extend the debt ceiling, etc.

I always figured it was because Republicans wanted to protect the wealthy. And because Republicans figured that protecting the money of the wealthy meant that the wealthy would spend more. (Of course, that economic strategy has been proven wrong over and over and over.)

But now I realize there is another reason: Conservative Republicans don’t want more revenue to strengthen government – because these Republicans want small government and pretty much no government. And all this began aggressively with Reagan. Wow. What kind of country is this?
